8:41 am - A Beauty CV

Hey everyone,

I am looking for a bit of beauty-related, but somewhat unusual advice. I want to apply for jobs in various beauty stores in central London for the holiday period. Most ask for a CV as the initial stage of application. Unfortunately my resume consists mostly of academic work, bar work and office temping, although I do have a bit of retail experience too.

What sort of things should I be highlighting on a resume targetted specifically at beauty jobs? Creative hobbies, self-presentation, customer care? What about amateur makeover experience like making up my friends and family - is that worth mentioning? Should I include online links to images of makeup I've done, or is that too much for an initial overture?

I know submitting a portfolio is more usual for this kind of work, but I think as it's just seasonal temping, they want to be spending less time looking at applications.

Thanks for any advice!

11:52 am - Superdrug 50% off Almay

The whole Almay range at Edinburgh Princes St. Superdrug is 50% off - I mention it here because hopefully it's a nationwide promotion.

I recommend checking out their foundation, which is for my money the absolute shiznit as high street brands go, and particularly failsafe at only £4.99 a bottle in this here sale.

I use the line smoothing one (even though the name makes me feel about 100). It's not got the hugest range of shades, don't think it even caters for Asian or black skin, but provided you're pasty white or lightly tanned it's excellent for dry winter skin, actively guards against breakouts and provides SPF15. The stay-on-all-day one is also meant to be really good.

Just thought I'd share.

8:08 pm - Magic Makeup stock influx

Those who already visit the site may have noticed this already.

Magic Makeup has always stocked one or two Urban Decay shadows, but right now they have 20+ shades, brights, neutrals, sparkle and non-sparkles, all at £3.99 each, including the awesome ones like Goddess, Asphyxia, Baked, Hotpants. I think they will probably sell out quickly.

Go get! Go get!

7:02 pm - Boots 17 Eley Kishimoto GWP - Thumbs up!

This promotion is running right now. You spend a fiver on 17, and you receive a gift box with Eley Kishimoto designs on it. Inside is a full size eyeshadow and a full size lip gloss, a handbag mirror and a trial size black mascara. All the items have Eley Kishimoto patterned packaging, and the eyeshadow and lipgloss are in cardboard pots a la Stila single shadows.

Here it is

The eyeshadow ("Night Pool") is a sheer blue-green. It comes in swirly blue green and black coloured packaging. The base colour is a sort of grey-cloud blue, and the iridescent shimmer overlaying it is mint green/turquoise. I was surprised to find such an unusual colour from 17 - it's totally unlike anything I have in my collection (which is some feat).

The gloss ("Chill Kiss") comes in black packaging with pink spider webs on it. This is pretty shimmery cool pink, and looks a bit intense in the pot, but goes on quite sheer, giving just enough shimmer and colour to distinguish it as a gloss rather than a balm. It's not sticky, and feels natural on the lips. Oh, and it's minty.

I can't comment on the mascara 'cause I want to keep it closed and hygienic til I need it, but the outside is black with spiderwebs on it.

The mirror is about 2 inches in diameter and has the same blue green and black swirly colours as the eyeshadow pot.

In order to get my hands on this intruiging collection, I also bought 17 Perfect Match foundation, one of those adjust-to-skin-tone ones. It seems OK too, sheer and light coverage, giving a natural looking finish with just enough cover to even skin tone. It's a bit siliconey feeling, almost a gel texture. I bought "light" which looks hideously orange in the tube, but turned out OK on my face. However it was unable to lighten itself to the shade of my inner wrist (which was the palest bit of skin I had handy) so I don't recommend it for anyone very very pale.

2:06 pm - Vacuous yap about makeup that nobody in my regular journal would want to read.

I LOVE makeupalley. Swap package this morning from Renee in South Carolina (landscape_babe), and she included two of the rare-as-whoa Sally Girl eyeshadows like what our Sally shops don't do any more - as extras!

Also, years after I lost my discontinued UD Rock Superstar face case in a move, I finally bring myself to buy a very expensive replacement on eBay. The day after it arrives in the post, I win another one on eBay! So now I have 2. That's cool though, the other can be kept as a backup, as it's one bit of makeup I would definitely use up and replace. It's a hot pink/purple/black/white colour scheme, in case you haven't seen it. A bit "Hot Topic"-y sounding, but actually just awesome.

Today I'm wearing UD Deluxe in "Honey" (gold) and Bobbi Brown "Charcoal" as liner - both MUA swaps.

I worry a bit that sooner or later I'll get swaplifted, but if I do, eh, c'est la vie. All the excellent swaps I've had so far definitely make up for that risk.

Today is a Good Face Day.

6:20 pm - cross posted

With some sadness, since pots are so nice, I decided to make the switch from pots to palettes. All my MAC, Urban Decay and Milani eyeshadows have been depotted, magnetised and labelled. I used a hair iron, a sheet of adhesive-backed magnetic paper, a craft knife, some nail scissors and two very callused guitarist fingertips.

(If anyone wants to know how to depot UD fliptop or tin shadows, Milani pots, MAC pots or screwtops, drop me a line 'cause I think I've more or less worked out how to do all of them with minimum hassle.)

Here are the two palettes I ended up with, one warm and one cool:

6:32 pm - "Maximum shin"

LOL@Boots.com content manager/editor.

Anyway, the credit-card sized mini palette you get when you spend £5 on 17 cosmetics at the moment is very nice, as well as offering said maximum leg bone, and can be viewed here -

I got mine today by purchasing Viva Diva e/s (as loved by aliiis) and a powder compact for those "it doesn't matter if it gets lost" trips/nights out when you don't really want to bring along your expensive stuff. Total £6.08. Not bad, nuh?

9:02 pm - TACKLEBOX!!

Get yourselves to LIDL ASAP, they're doing tackle boxes (amid other fishing gear) for £4.99 at the moment and they are PERFECT for makeup storage.

The design is something like this -

size about 25cmx25cmx50cm (at a guess).

And it says "Bait Box" on the lid. Which is kind of true, if you view your makeup as a man-attracting device.

11:10 pm - Fake MAC eyeshadow - a spotters guide.

Here's a run-down of the tell-tale differences between real MAC eyeshadows and the kind of fakes often sold on Ebay. The fakes were bought, by me, in good faith, so yeah - I'm a mug. But you get to benefit from it!

5:44 pm - MAC Lithograph

I thought I'd share the love of this new Fluidline from the A Muse collection. I wasn't sure about buying a Fluidline other than black, since they're huge and last forever and I don't know how often I'll use it. But I'm really happy with this.

2:12 am - New Pure Luxe!

I was just thinking "I wish there could be a Pure Luxe update. I have pretty much all the shades I want from them so far, and yet I want more!"

So I checked - AND THERE WAS!!! First one in months.

Check it out - new shadows, plus a new Kaleidoscope one too (those ones that change colour and are awesome)

5:50 pm - www.makeupalley.com

I've been a-swapping with people overseas via MUA. Today, my first packages arrived - and wow, I've got so much awesome American stuff!!

Milani eyeshadows and blush, Sonia Kashuk metal eyelash comb (a backup for the one I already have - they're worth their weight in gold), Jane liquid liner, Bath and Body works shower gels, body lotions, hand cream, soap, lip gloss... and I gave away a bunch of high end "buying experiments" that had previously sat unloved in the bottom of my makeup box.

I highly recommend putting any barely-used goods you don't want up for swap on there - both of the members I've swapped with have been lovely. They both did "Custom Purchases" in return for my stuff (i.e. they went shopping for me). I only hope they're as pleased with what I sent them.

I'm "idealforbarbecue" on there, if you're a member. Most people are in the US, but there are members from all over.

2:12 am - Heads up - animal testing

You may already have known that L'Oreal conduct animal testing on new ingredients for their health and beauty products, but did you know they now own the (previously squeaky clean) Body Shop chain?

Personally, I try to avoid L'Oreal, despite the fact they seem to have a finger in pretty much every cosmetics brand in the Western world. As of now I'll be steering clear of the Body Shop too.

Here's a news story on the topic;

And a less serious commentary;

6:50 pm - Random Tip

Nail polish - I've found that buffing my nails before applying coloured polish reduces the amount of staining when I take the polish off again. I guess because it reduces how porous the surface of the nail is.

Just a little bit of useful info!

9:19 pm - Purple/blue and sickeningly long male eyelashes.

After many months of praise and jealousy of his long and thick eyelashes, this boy here was persuaded to let me unleash their full power with a couple of coats of mascara. It's only one eye, and not as thorough a coverage as I might have liked, since he shied away from the brush like a frightened horse. But you get the idea. "Wow, they reach my eyebrows!", he said, batting them smugly.

MAC is bringing out a collection of "boy" makeup in the US at the moment, so who knows - this could be the first of many appearances...

Additionally, here is a purply blue effort on myself, with UD's Asphyxia applied over a Burt's Bees cream eyeshadow as base, and topped with UD Radium liquid eyeliner & black mascara.

12:59 pm - More offers from Boots

Aren't they lovely people? They've knocked £1 off their No. 17 eyeshadows so that the single shades are now only £1.79 and the quads £3.99. Must resist the urge to spend (BAD me! bought ENOUGH makeup recently to last forever!) but that "Pretty in Pink" palette is VERY VERY tempting :-)

12:47 pm - Bombshell bath photos

I wasn't planning on going outside with bright blue eyelids yesterday, but in the end I did, and felt pretty good.

I sent these pictures in to Bombshell Bath for their customer gallery - they say they'll give a discount coupon to anyone who submits JPGs of their products in use, so it might be a constructive thing to do if you're bored and own some of their stuff...

This is Digital Faerie and London (eyeshadows) (with Urban Decay Skyscraper mascara).

1:24 pm - Miffed! Bombshell Bath Order Update

Well, I now know what's happened to my "Bombshell Bath" order I made a few weeks ago and was getting concerned about not having arrived....

UK Customs stopped it and have decided that I owe about £9 "duty" on the products getting delivered.

Considering the entire order added up to about £27 before posting, this seems harsh.... I'm also a bit concerned that my stuff might not be intact, considering the package has clearly been opened up and rifled through, but I guess the only way I'm going to find out is by coughing up the cash at the post office, huh. Not Happy.

I'd ordered 2 lipsticks, 10 eyeshadows and about half a dozen samples of other products, so while it was a good-size order it was hardly HUGE, and the £9 customs' charge seems ridiculous, that's like 33% of total sales value....

Not at all BB's fault but I thought I'd post here to let you lovely folkx know that this can happen when receiving packages by post from the US. I guess I've just been unlucky as I know LOADS of other people who've got stuff from BB -including larger orders than mine - and other US cosmetic companies without any problem, I just thought I should make people aware that this can happen.

Does anyone here happen to know much about Customs' Tax/Duty and how it works? Can they just stick any value of extra "duty" on a package? UK VAT is 17.5% so I'd expected to pay this, like £5 AT MOST, on my package of goods.

Has anyone else been hit by this kind of problem themselves? Interested to find out what I can expect to pay, or if there's any way to avoid this kind of cost and inconvenience, for future reference.

STILL think the Bombshell Bath prices are good EVEN with this unexpected blinkin' surcharge as long as the products are nice (when I finally get round to receiving them)
